Thomas Class: This adult study group is dedicated to the proposition that ordinary Christians “can handle the truth” about the Bible. Historical backgrounds, literary-critical methodologies, and other tools that have long been held to be the exclusive property of seminaries, biblical scholars and professional ministers are employed in this class to uncover the authorship, composition and original intention of the sacred texts. Study is not confined to the accepted canon of Scripture, but includes many writings that never “made it” into the Old or New Testaments. If you ever wondered if there is any truth to the Da Vinci Code, you should check out this class. We meet 9:30 am Sunday mornings in the church library downstairs. We look forward to seeing you there!
The Thomas Class will be following up its study of "Sexuality and Spirituality" with a book study of Robin Scroggs' classic work, The New Testament and Homosexuality. This book will provide the social and cultural backgrounds for understanding key passages in the New Testament that have often been used in the modern debate over homosexuality. This class meets at 9:30AM Sundays in the downstairs church library. For more information contact Rich Wall at rich.wall@att.net.
Beacon class:
The Beacon Class focuses on applying scripture to everyday life. We are currently basing a series of studies on the commandment to love our neighbors by studying the faith of our neighbors in Virginia-Highland and Atlanta. Recent studies included Bread of Life: the Faith of our Homeless Neighbors, and Many Faiths, One Neighborhood: Judaism.
Beginning August 8, the Beacon class will resume meeting and continue its study of the faith of our neighbors with a series on Islam. The series will include comparisons between Islam and Christianity, multimedia presentations on the history and characteristics of Islam, and examination of Islam in its socio-political context and how we can approach such issues from a progressive Christian perspective. We will also be attending several events at the Carlos Museum as they focus their special exhibition and educational efforts on Islam this fall. This class meets at 9:30AM Sundays in the Beacon Classroom. For more information contact Anna Hall at anica_74@yahoo.com.
Children's Ministry:
Children are welcome in the nursery and children's classroom from 9:30 AM until the end of worship. Our children's minister provides a mix of play, crafts, and lessons in Christian topics that is suitable for all ages. We generally have a small but mixed age group that has a lot of fun. We'd love to have your kids join us.
Coffee and Questions:
Once a month at Java Vino, a coffee and wine bar in Virginia-Highland, we gather at 7:00 PM to discuss Christian topics that we are curious to know more about. This guided but very open discussion can be serious, irreverant, moving, and/or meditative, but is always fun. Topics for discussion have included the Trinity, Jesus' relationship to God, good and evil, sin and salvation, and many more. Java Vino also has a menu of sandwiches, salads, soups, and appetizers, desserts, wine and coffee drinks.
